New construction Smokehouse built in 1992 by Cobblestone Class given by Paul Briggs in the Hamlet of Gorham, Ontario County.
Thanks to Dennis Hogan, Town of Gorham Historian, and others, the following information and new photographs have been provided.
The stone shed was built on the property of Melinda Hill in 1992 as a project demonstrating the 19th century cobblestone masonry. It features historically correct lime mortar and glacial cobbles from a gravel pit in Victor. Quoin stones came from a quarry near Seneca Falls. The mason was Paul Briggs of Ithaca. The Greek eaves moldings were custom made by restoration contractor Peter Treib of Lima. Note, the bricks that form the vent hole over the door; the top brick is made of clay dug from the property, and fired using wood culled from the property. The other bricks were hand-made as well... in the 1830's. They come from a demolished building in Ithaca. And one of the "cobbles" in the front of the building is actually a lake-washed brick found in Seneca Lake at Glass Factory Bay.
